Hi – I have a question for you. I’d like to put a fabulous light fixture over my kitchen table, but where the existing, very small fixture is now, it’s not centered, so it would be hard to cover up that existing hole in ceiling. I’m assuming the correct way to do this would be to cut a new hole in ceiling and re-wire and then seal off the old receptacle….aside from this…any suggestions?? I’m almost thinking if I get a large fixture, as in a “pot rack” type or “pool table” type, it might bridge the gap from where old fixture starts to the center of table (and no…I can’t just move the table). I have a picture, but don’t see a way to attach to this email…I guess I’ll wait to hear back. Thanks ~ Laura

don’t know if you are aware of it or not. At a good price you can create them with an old table from craigslist. Google how to.. and you will find step by step instructions.

I am moving to new build home and family room and kitchen are one large room. I gave camel couch and love seat that is nearly new. Was in my living room before. My kitchen cupboards are grey, hardwood is dark. I want to incorporate grey accents as well as chrome lamps to go with the rest of the room. Am having difficulty trying to put it all together. Am looking for a little more contemporary look, maybe new end tables? Could you give me some ideas?
We’re redoing a bathroom. My husband has an electrician coming tomorrow and says that I must decide tonight whether we are going to have sconces, pendant lighting (hanging from ceiling) or lighting fixtures attached to the top of the mirrors. He already has decided to put canned lights in the bathroom but says we need more lighting than this. Wouldn’t it look odd to have a fixture hanging from the ceiling over each mirror if we have canned lights? He also proposed sconces (in lieu of hanging fixtures) but I don’t think this would work because because the countertop is L shaped with 2 sinks. When you enter the room, there is a sink directly to your right and the other one directly in front. There is very little wall space between where a mirror would go over the sink to the right and the wall. There would be room for sconces on both sides of a mirror directly in front. But I’m not sure we should have sconces next to one mirror but not the other. I have not picked out mirrors yet (we bought some but I think they may be too small for the wall space and L-shaped cabinets and countertop). We used to have a huge unframed mirror on each wall that covered from back splash to about a foot from the ceiling and this worked well. A light fixture hung over each sink (no canned lights). We wanted to update by putting in nice wood cabinets (these will be in L shape and be as big as the countertop) and replacing the laminate L-shaped counter with a marble one. We’re also putting down a new floor and tub and wall tiles in the bath area. I’m never able to visualize without seeing the finished product so I’ve had a tough time figuring out what mirrors and lighting to go with. If you have any suggestions, I would be eternally grateful! Thanks.
BTW — I didn’t send a photo because when I came home from work today the bathroom was entirely gutted. All this done in a single day of work by the contractors!

First of all, don’t sacrifice. Don’t make a rushed decision to get something done, because it’s on sale or it’s in stock. You will regret it. Trust me on that.

My answer: YES, If he made the decision for canned lights, you pretty much need to go with wall hung fixtures to complement, unless there’s a great location in the center or over a tub for a chandelier…I’m a sucker for chandeliers and I like them with sconces as well!

My Answer: If the can lights are placed over the sink, they will provide plenty of light and wall lights above a mirrow will possibly be too much. I like the sconces purely from an aethetic point and to provide a bit more lighting. I am not so stuck on treating everything equal (balancing out things) and possibly one sconce would be nice, but I speaking without photo’s.
As far as mirrors, you probably are wanting framed mirrors for an updated look and something different, but don’t forget that if you a did a wrap of counter to ceiling mirror, a sconce or two could be mounted directly on the mirror which can be kind of glam.
Please make sure that the electrician does everything on dimmers. Even over a tub…why? Why not…it give you options!

I just got my house painted. It has white trim & I’m doing black accents (shutters, lights, etc) I’m looking into buying a storm door for my front door. I saw a black one on sale. Would this look okay or should I buy a white storm door instead?

I’ll bet your house looks great…I love black accents on houses, I have a black door on mine! What color is your door? Here’s my thoughts on storm doors. I’m not crazy about them and don’t have one, but I do appreciate the cross breeze that they let in. If you are going with a storm dorm because of the breeze factor, I’d select one that will disappear…one with a streamline frame and full screen. The point is to be as invisible as possible. I HAVE A HALF BATH. EVERYTHING IS WHITE. THE FAUCET IS GOLDTONE, CERAMIC TILE IS WHITE AND THE WALLS ARE KHAKI. THINKING ABOUT TOFFEE(GOLDISH) COLOR BATH RUG AND TOILET LID COVER WITH BROWN AND YELLOW ACCENTS. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON COLOR AND DECORATING? HELP!
I have ceilings 20-30 ft high in part of a space. I want to install a dual head celilng fan.
The walls in the space are white and will remain that way to showcase the owner’s artwort.
The colors in space neutrals (tans, taupes, browns) with red accents.
Probably going to add a large deep red area rug.
Cabinets are cherry wood.
Would you put a fan that blends in (regarding color) with the celing or one that stands out? I have seen darker to pick up the cherry wood, and I liked the lighter ivory to add texture to the celing while adidng practicality.

After doing some rearranging in my bedroom, I am left with a blank wall where I was hoping to put some pictures of me and my husband. While I had a specific style in mind (3 pictures going down vertically, the middle being larger than the top and bottom, with nice sized mats), my husband pointed out that the wall still has holes from where our mirror hung and he’d prefer if I could cover the holes than repairing the drywall, repainting etc.
So, I was thinking of doing 4 pictures of equal size 2 on top of 2. My question is how do I choose the color of the frames? My bedroom furniture is mahogany and the pictures above our bed are also dark brown. Our mirror is an orangey/gold speckled with black (that sounds extremely ugly when I just explained it, but it actually complements the room quite well) and our linen has some maroons and green going on. Merry Christmas!
I am sick of the brown frames. Is there any way I can change it up? Should I make the photos black and white? What size should I make them? I was thinking 8×10 frame with a mat to fit 5×7 picture, but now I am thinking I should do square frames. HELP!

Hi, I would like your thoughts on window treatments for my living room. I have a wall with a “normal” window and next to it is the door to the back yard. Above that (about 3 to 5ft) is a picture window the same width as the normal window and then above the door is another window (door width). I go back and forth trying to figure out if I should put floor to ceiling drapes (could be expensive with 20 ft ceilings) but with the distance between the windows this may look awkward; or if I should just cover the one normal window. I was thinking maybe a shade of some sort but I just can’t decide. I have photos. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!

Amy, I am the women that spoke to you when you were picking up your”Kitchen Sink” at Whole Foods and you were kind enough to give me a sip! Since then I have been juicing for breakfast and lunch and then eating dinner. I am learning what I like and don’t like and I am amazed at how good the juices are. My question for you is I feel guilty throwing away the pulp. I have the Breville juice fountain plus. The pulp doesn’t seem dry and there’s so much of it! I feel guilty throwing what looks like usable food into the trash. I’m confused because smoothies utilize that but somehow it’s not as healthy as juicing? I’ve read your whole blog on juicing and Joe’s whole blog and I didn’t see any answers to this. Can you help?
Hi Carol! I am so glad to hear from you! I had the same issue with pulp. I still do, but here are some things I do and some thoughts. Sorry if in advance if I ramble…
Smoothies and Juice in my book are both equally good for you, but in different ways. Smoothies are good because they incorporate most of the pulp from fruit and vegetables… some of course are best to peel. You get great fiber from smoothies plus all the nutrients.
Juices on the other hand do not have to be digested, so the micro-nutrients can be absorbed immediately and can begin to work their magic on you.
I love both and will probably eventually do a combination of both. I will never sit down and eat 5-6 handfuls fo spinach, but I will drink it in a juice or smoothie. I love a green smoothie and a green juice.
As far as juicers go, I have the same juicer as you and it’s my go-to juicer. That said, I received the Omega J8006 for Christmas and it definitely juices greens and harder vegetable better – the pulp is much drier. When it comes to fruit though, it’s not quite as good. What I love about it is that it does wheat grass, makes nut butters which are delicious and extrudes fresh pasta. It’s a lot to slower to juice though and for that reason I won’t give up my juice fountain plus.
As far as pulp goes, I do throw it away. I could make muffins and such, but that would be counter productive. At some point I will probably explore pulp recipes, but in the meantime I have one go-to favorite that I wrote about here…
