Preventing a Car Break-In

My daughter Ashley had a string of bad luck. A string of really not so nice things have happened to her in the last few months to no fault of her own. As a mom, I want to fix it. Mostly, all I can do is offer hugs and hope; to explaining that things will get better and in general… humanity is good. I do believe that.

The last incident, a car break-in,  is probably preventable. She learned from a previous break-in not to leave the navigator in plain sight and removed it; storing it in the center console. In retrospect, leaving the holder on the window was not a good idea, but according to her insurance company, even hiding that most likely wouldn’t have prevented the theft. Apparently, just seeing see ring marks on the window will prompt a break-in. Ashley also had an empty (thank goodness) Coach purse hidden in the back seat which they wouldn’t have seen from outside, but once in, they grabbed it as well.

The best way to prevent your car from being broken into is by having nothing in the car to steal – right? If you are anything like me, that’s easier said than done. I’m usually carrying an oversized handbag, my Design Assistant with a computer inside and a coffee mug. Now you want me to grab my navigator and other items as well?

The answer is yes, but here’s an easy solution that can not only prevent a break-in, but simplify your life as well. I did a post a while back about Putting your Baskets to Work.   There I talked about designating a basket to go from home-to the car-and back to home. I recommended that you  ”store it near the door you’ll use out to your car and fill it with items that need to be returned for credit, a water bottle, snacks, a shopping list, etc.”  Those suggestions will make your life a little simpler, but let’s take it a step further. You should also use it to store your navigator, CD’s and anything else that is not permanently attached to your car.

Tip: Make sure your basket is lightweight and easily carried with one hand.

Below is a friend’s collapsible car basket fully loaded and ready to go…items are kept in zippered bags for easy access. Simply leave it near the door for the next trip…no need to empty unless there’s something you don’t need to carry anymore.

She keeps on the road paperwork & coupons inside, Do you see the Design Assistant file inside?

This car basket even has a storage cup hooked inside to hold small tools and gadgets she often needs when on the road.

Stores pens, tools and more

Last of all…don’t forget to clean your windshield of those telling little circles…Store wipes in a door pocket – it’s quick and easy to do!

You’ll quickly wonder how you ever survived without a portable car basket and though it may add an extra step to getting in and out of the car, it prevents a whole lot of aggravation in the long run. xoxox

Additional Safety Notes:

  • When out shopping, keep a towel or blanket to cover your basket in a nondescript manner.  It’s better to cover it up than to publicly transfer the basket to your trunk while in a parking lot – that’s a definite heads up that something valuable is inside.
  • A good thing to keep in a car basket is a can of wasp/hornet spray. It has a 23′ stream and is better than pepper spray.
  • Never be a good Samaritan in a parking lot. If someone approaches you, get back in your car, tell them to stop and announce loudly that you are calling for help. Lock the doors and drive away.

An Organized Life. The Goals

So it’s been a month since I embarked on this  journey and although at the moment, I don’t really have a set plan, I do have some goals and rules that I am following. I’ve decided that I’ll choose projects as I go and see how it evolves. The truth is I’m not just cleaning our closets. I am cleaning out my life. My hope is that by the end of the year I will have accomplished or be close to accomplishing each goal I list below. Don’t worry, this year I’m still be talking about decorating, in fact I’ll take you along as I tackle some projects in my home, but I do hope you’ll join me as I dish about re-designing my life and surroundings. Below I’ve listed my goals and tomorrow I’ll share my rules. But before I do that, I guess I should come clean…

THE CONFESSION: I think every bad habit needs to be owned before it can be tossed, so here goes…I am not attached to junk, I just don’t make time to get rid of it. I know that everything should be put in it’s place, but I don’t make time to create that place or put it back. They say that a cluttered desk is a sign of creativity – I must be really creative…haha! Does that make me more creative by having a cluttered purse and a cluttered car? I don’t think so. The truth is I think better when I start with a clean desk and a clean space. I am less stressed when my kitchen counters are clear and I eat better when I know what I am going to eat in advance. I actually have an extremely organization mind and have been granted two patents for organizational products (shameless product plug). This year, I am going to put into action the things that I know. I hope you’ll join me!

THE GOALS:

1. Organize my Surroundings  and KEEP them that way. This includes my purse, car, garage, office, etc. I think that will be the easy part. I imagine that organizing is much like losing weight and eating healthy; it has to become a way of life.

2. Organize my Projects, Bills and Paperwork. I once took a job for a year or two that was so mundane I could clear off my desk at the end of the day and not worry about a thing until I arrived the next day. It was nice for a bit, but it eventually drove me crazy. I need the exitement of creating new things, tackling new projects and taking risks, but there should be a happy medium. I will pay attention to the things I don’t like to do, so I can be successful at what I love to do.

3. Organize my Schedule to Design a Healthy Me. (3 part)

a.) I will take Iron. I am anemic. I’ve needed to take iron for years…I’m thinking I really ought to make time to take that stupid little white pill once a day so I have the energy to get this all done. My teeth will thank me. If you are an ice chewer, get tested for anemia – your teeth will thank you.

b.) I will exercise. I hate it. I just do. I hate to make the time, I hate to sweat, I just don’t like it. My doctor says I have to do it, I guess maybe she might be right. I am going to start with walking in my house (because it’s cold outside) with Leslie Sansone ( on DVD) at least 3 times a week. I will also play wii fit- I do love my wii. My kids bought it for us for Christmas and I need to maintain my first place status in multiple events, but I will branch out to more athletic events instead of just the balancing ones, which are my favorite :)

c.) I will eat healthy. I need to prepare food on Sundays…chop, cook, etc…anything that makes it easier during the week. I need to know what I am going to eat tomorrow before I go to bed, so I don’t make bad choices…aka: stuff a lot of pointless things in my mouth that make me fat. I am going to cut out sugar and white flour and lean towards clean eating. It will be a work in progress, but at the end of the day…or hopefully the year…I will be at a healthy weight. I’m not going to lie…I want to fit into my Calvin Kleins. I bought them in the designer department at Macy’s on 34th street in the 80′s. I looked hot in them…at least I thought I did.  They’ve  been to Studio 54, Tavern on the Green, Serendipity and Sunday afternoon breakfast in the village. I just want to be in them one more time.  I’m not going for hot, just in them. Well maybe a little hot…but I digress….till tomorrow…xoxox

Thursday’s Quick Tip: De-Cluttering your Counters

a great way to get clutter off your counter

Getting clutter off your counter

Clutter is an evil thing…All of us strive to get rid of it all, but sometime the stuff we have on our counters are things we like to have at our fingertips and often don’t have the cabinet space to store it. The thing is, when assorted items are on your countertop, it not only looks messy; it’s difficult to clean around them.

A friend of mine has come up with a perfect solution that she uses in her kitchen and bathrooms. Items that she normally kept grouped on a counter top, she now puts on top of a cake plate. The raised plate gives items a place of their own, looks great and best of all makes cleaning the counter a breeze. I think it’s a brilliant idea. HomeGoods has a great selection of cake plates usually for around $12.00 – 19.00.

Here’s some I found online…

TIP: Add some glam by purchasing an inexpensive cake plate and using a glue gun; glue a band of  beads to the rim. You can find beads online or at most fabric and craft stores.

Simple Valentine Day Ideas for ‘I love You’ Memories

valentine.jpg

Today I realized that Valentines Day is but 2 days away and I’m wondering what to do to make it a special day for the one’s that I love. It occurs to me, that making my family feel special doesn’t have to take alot of time or require a trip to the mall. The reality, is that my most memorable Valentine Day gifts weren’t a dozen red roses, but handmade gifts from my children or unexpected surprises. Those are the gifts I remember the best. So… in the spirit of creating memories, here are my simple, but from the heart Valentine suggestions, for the one’s you love.

  • Tuck a brief hand written love note into a briefcase, backpack. purse or lunchbag. Title it 5 Reasons Why I Love You and tell your someone special specifically what makes them special to you.
  • Surprise your family with dinner; complete with candles, a table cloth and your best china.  Side note: If you typically have problems getting home in time for dinner (like I do, lately) surprise them and actually BE there on time for a change.
  • Pick up some sugar cookie dough, cut it into heart shapes, bake and have a family decorating party complete with icing, sprinkles and sprinkles. Or, do the same thing with ice cream and make your own sundaes. The point here, is to do something other than the same old thing and create some special memories.
  • Send an e-mail  or text message to loved ones with hugs and kisses. xoxoxo

PS. Don’t forget about YOU! Buy yourself a scented candle, a special journal, or Oprah’s new book club selection -something to nourish your soul. After all, you’re very special too!
